The purpose of my project 2 is to explain the controversial view of the University of New Mexico and how in 2016 a group of individuals attempted to change that view. The controversy dates back to the 1600’s in what is now known as New Mexico which has one of the highest populations of Native Americas in the United States of America. The introduction of a conquistador in the imagery on the University of New Mexico official seal has been a point of contention since its inception in 1909. It was my objective to show how the seal was offensive to the Native Americans and how the University of New Mexico responded to the complaints brought to UNM in 2016. The UNM Kiva Club and The Red Nation filed official complaints to the University of New Mexico detailing how the seal was not a true representation of The University of New Mexico. It was those complaints that inspired The University of New Mexico to form an official committee to create a new seal. My audience is primary and secondary in nature. The historical nature of the subject limits the audience. A formal letter is the best way to the severity of the subject. It wasn’t until 2021 that a new seal was officially adopted by UNM. I chose this project because New Mexico and UNM are a big part of my life. I took the subject seriously and tried to follow the requirements of the assignment to my best ability.
The University of New Mexico seal has a storied past. In 1909 the seal was documented with an image of a conquistador and a frontiersman. Since then, the imagery has been a point of contention. The reason it was so controversial had to do with the history of New Mexico itself. Since the early 1600’s the Spanish Conquistador has been viewed by the Native American as a negative symbol. Mainly because when the conquistador from Spain first arrived in the Southern Rocky Mountain Range in what is now New Mexico. The documented history shows that the Spanish enslaved the Native Americans. This has been a controversy since the first arrival of the conquistador. The University of New Mexico seal was a flashpoint of that controversy in 2016. Members of the UNM Kiva Club and the Red Nation sent official complaints regarding the University of New Mexico seal. Currently the seal has UNM block lettered and no visual imagery of a conquistador.
